5 Things to Keep Handy When Packing Up Your House

While making a household move can be invigorating—it can also be stressful.

If you are one of the many people planning an upcoming move, you've probably been researching and implementing many moving hacks. As you get ready, make sure you have the following things available with you in your car rather than the moving truck on relocation day.

1. Toolbox

If you are relocating, you will need to have a toolbox. It’s one of the most important things you will want to have with you.

Your tools will come in handy when you're taking things apart, unpacking them, and putting them back together again. Of course, having all your tools on hand isn't necessary, but you should have a small toolbox with the essentials.

Here are a few tools to put in your mini move-day toolbox:

  • Hammer

  • Screwdriver

  • Scissors

  • Utility knife

  • Measuring tape

It's always better to keep these tools on hand, even if they don't seem necessary right now.

2. Cleaning Supplies

Moving your new items into a dirty home is the last thing you want to do. Hopefully, the previous homeowners cleaned on their way out, but the chances are they were rushed and anxious to complete their move too. Therefore, they might not have done a thorough job.

Maintain a stock of your essential cleaning supplies at all times.

Here are things to include in your cleaning kit.

  • Broom and dustpan

  • Multi-purpose cleaning spray and wipes

  • Towels, washcloths, rags

  • Trash bags

You can use these cleaning supplies to ensure you don't place items in dusty cabinets or use a dirty bathroom or sinks left by the previous occupants.

3. Toiletries

Ensure that you include your toiletries in your moving essentials box.

Digging through your boxes to find your toiletries after a long day of moving is not fun, and you'll be ready to clean up and relax.

Keep medications, contact supplies, bath towels, toothbrushes, and soap, in a convenient spot. Also, remember enough toilet paper for all of the bathrooms.

4. Safety Items

A moving emergency can put a whole new level of stress on you. So be prepared for any eventuality.

A few safety items to keep on hand include:

  • Flashlight

  • Fire extinguisher

  • First aid kit

If a situation does arise, you will be thankful that you prepared for it in advance.

5. Electronics Chargers

Chargers and external batteries are essential moving day items. These are useful to keep on hand.

Although you may start the day with fully charged phone and laptop batteries, they will quickly drain during the moving process. To navigate an unfamiliar neighborhood, you may need to call family members for assistance, watch tutorial videos to take apart last-minute furniture or refer to maps for help.
