Moving? Ask Yourself These Questions to Decide Whether It’s Time to Hire the Pros

The thought of handling packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking can feel daunting, even for those who move regularly. So if you're getting ready to move and you're feeling overwhelmed, you may be wondering whether it's time to get help from professional household movers. Here, we'll take a look at a few questions you can ask to help you decide whether it makes sense to hire a professional moving company instead of doing all the work of moving by yourself.

Question #1: What's your timeline?

If you know you're going to be moving a few months out from your final day in your old home, you may have plenty of time to clean, organize, and pack your belongings. If your move is a bit more sudden, however, you may be in a time crunch. When you need to pack and move quickly, hiring a professional moving company can make sense instead of figuring it out on your own. In either case, consider working with a moving company that also provides packing services

Question #2: How far away are you moving?

If you're moving nearby, you may simply be able to drive over to your destination in a moving truck. If you're moving more than a few minutes away, you'll need to know how much time it will take you to get to your new destination while hauling your belongings. It might be easier to hire a moving company, fly to your new home, and meet your belongings there.

Question #3: Do you have family and friends available to help in both locations?

If you have friends and family who can help you pack, load, unload, and unpack in both your new and old home, you may be able to manage the move by yourself. However, if either location leaves you without a support team, it's a better idea to work with professionals. When you talk with a professional moving company, be sure to mention if you need more help in one of your two locations than the other.

Question #4: What are your limitations?

When you're preparing to move, it's normal to overestimate your abilities. It's key to consider how much you're able to move on your own. The last thing you want is to hurt your back while trying to load a too-heavy-for-you item onto a moving truck (especially if you don't have friends and family nearby to help you if you're struggling to move an item). If you're moving large pieces of furniture or heavy appliances, it's best to err on the side of caution and hire a moving company.
