Change of Address Checklist Before a Move

Planning your household move involves countless details. One important task to keep as a priority on your endless to-do lists is submitting your change of address requests. You don’t want your essential mail or deliveries to end up lost or with the wrong people. Let’s look at important details to add to your change of address checklist.

Double-Check Your New Address

Carefully check your new address to ensure you wrote down house numbers, road spelling, and zip codes correctly. A simple oversight could prevent you from getting important mail or packages.

Make a List of Change of Address Contacts

This will be time-consuming since you probably have numerous accounts. Important entities to make sure have your new address include the following.

  • Banks, credit unions, and all financial institutions

  • Online financial accounts, including PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, and others

  • Utility companies, both old and new

  • Internet provider

  • Mobile phone carrier

  • Employers and schools

  • Healthcare providers

  • Credit card companies (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, and any store cards)

  • Government agencies (IRS, state tax agency, Social Security, DMV, voter registration, etc.)

  • Insurance companies

  • Streaming services

  • Family and friends

  • Food delivery services

  • Online shopping sites

  • Recurring deliveries, like Amazon and others

  • Magazines and subscriptions

An excellent way to keep track is about three to four months before your move; start noting down the mail you get. This way, you can track both quarterly and monthly bills. If you have annual bills, try to remember to include these too. Making a comprehensive list of everyone needing your contact information helps catch anyone you might forget.

Drop Change-of-Address Form with USPS

About two weeks to a month before your move, drop a form online or in person with the USPS to let the agency know you’re moving. Ensure to include every household member on the form so everyone’s mail is forwarded promptly. The USPS will forward mail for six months to a year. Remember that USPS cannot forward specific types of mail, and other mail might slip through the cracks. You don’t want anything to get lost, so the more you can change ahead of time, the better.

Gather Documentation for Change of Address

In most cases, you must log onto websites to change your address. Here’s a list of common items you’ll need when changing your address.

  • Account numbers

  • Credit card numbers (to enter for new payments)

  • Passwords for online accounts (big time saver!)

  • Complete new address

In other cases, you’ll need documentation to prove your residency and may require a copy of your lease or property title.

Other Important Updates to Make

While you want to get a jump on changing your address, there are some things you might need to wait to do, or maybe you ran out of time before moving day. Remember to update your driver’s license or state ID, along with your car registration. If moving out of state, you’ll also need new tags, registration, and inspection. Additionally, most states require you to report your change of address within 30 days of your move, even if you’re only moving across town.
